I don't have much experience with dating, but I think "I'm sorry, I can't make it because I have to take care of an ailing relative" goes over a bit differently then "I'm sorry, I can't make it because I have to defrost the freezer" or "wash my hair" or "go off with my friends to talk about how I'm standing you up and laugh and laugh and laugh." Just a hunch...
