Have to agree there. And maybe Gilmour’s finest lead work, which is saying something. Shine on, Dogs, and Comfortably Numb are an extraordinary trio of electric guitar pieces. Shine on and Dogs are both the product of a chamber quartet with the imagination to play concertos.

And Comfortably Numb could be lieder given sonata virtuosity.

Gilmour’s mastery of melodic line is really given rein from DSotM up until the wall, where he was constrained by Waters increasing need to control every aspect of things as he dreamt bigger dreams than Syd, but not as charming ones.

I envy almost every note Gilmour has played since DSotM. He has this unerring talent for putting the right note in the right place. What’s even worse is he is a damn good bloke too. Some geniuses, like Van Morrison for example, are known to be on the other end of the spectrum, and we can admire the talent, and really find the other stuff unspeakable. Gilmour is pretty damn cool all the way through. Maybe his ex-wives might not say that, but even there I reckon he’s probably behaved like a gentleman. Not just great hands, fantastic melodic sense, and stunning kit; on top of it all he’s a good bloke who happily stands his round, so to speak.

Impossible to dislike the guy even from reasons of envy.
