George double R is an ok writer, and I really like the telly series, but George Martin has a bigger presence in my world by an exponential factor.
I recently reread Iain M Banks' "Surface Detail". For sheer modern sci-fi nastiness and clever plotting, it's a bit difficult to beat. I would also recommend "Altered Carbon" by Richard K Morgan, though I haven't as yet seen the TV version.
