Ah, the wicked ways of my youth...

Ah the wicked ways of my youth....

The notion of a 'mistress' (a lady of taste and discrimination what does, as the esturine amongst us would have) is normally associated with marriage. Being the lad I was, alongside my live-in girlfriend there would be the occasional times when I met a women with whom I could share other than my more abstract pursuits.
When I lived with Sandra, who was my bridge partner as well as my partner in other things, I did have the [searches for acceptable euphemism] hmmm, occasional and sporadic extra-non-marital affair.
Hazel was one such.
I imagine I was convenient and given to taking sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll quite seriously: and I suppose I was a laugh and a support as H. went through her divorce. In fact H. jokes from time to time that I was a necessary stop on the itinery of the divorcing housewives of Surrey during the 90's. This sort of thing can tend to spoil a chap. Even now, when the soul of involuntary chastity, dammit, I have memories enough not to worry should I never have sex again.
H. discarded me quite quickly, having understood that I wasn't much more than a good laugh; and we remain good chums to this day.
She turns fifty this week. There's a hall booked for Saturday. We'll all get drunk (apart from me: I have to drive home). Blimey.

Happy Birthday Hazel.
(and Em, if you're reading this you can point H towards it. Even if she never speaks to me again.)

Good thing you've apologized for it all.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, you've actually read my Apologia so....dammit, leave me be bad in my own time and fashion. And besides, the 'Polly' was art, but I behaved badly without the foreknowledge of that as excuse. post hoc ergo ect ect sa molesworth II.

Oh don't worry, your badness of yesterday remains intact, 'Polly' or no 'Polly'.

I'm glad someone recognises it.

Err, meant to write 'yesteryear', but yesterday works too. Either way, your legacy of bad lives on.

Yeah, but we don't mug old age pensioners. Or shoot classmates. Or happy-slap some old codger to death so we can post it on you tube.

Alas I'm no longer quite that young man. The fact that in my youth, women fell like ninepins for my small exercise of charm, doesn't change the here and now.

Poor Sandra. We split in '92 and I felt pretty bad about my treatment of her, though she set the precedent if you catch my meaning. If a girl gives a chap an excuse to behave badly, well....

Hugely, I would have thought, and in some ways more narrow. But there's hope for you chaps yet.
I'd hate to be thought of as tame, even now approaching my dotage: but the the present generation appears to have widened the divisions between feral and civilised.
In my day a touch or roguishness was de rigueur but we were still supposed to retain a vestigial notion of civilisation even when bedding an inappropriate woman. Courtesy first, m'dear.

I told her...

But as the only word of which I could think to describe the post was a eulogy, she may have got the wrong idea.

Ho hum.

Erk....eulogy....I'll never be forgiven.
I shall have to call you and explain. Hope N and H are well. Look forward to the party on Saturday. I have learned the solo from 'Black Dog' and will slot in with the band if absolutely required so to do.
The things we do for chums.
Hey-ho.
