(no subject)
Aug. 31st, 2007 09:18 amI awoke this morning to Radio 3 (as usual).
After ten minutes or so the news came on, and through my half-waking jumble of impressions I thought I heard a news report which stated that GWB had criticised the military dictatorship of Burma/Myanmar. Since rising from my pit I have subsequently scanned all my news sources, looking for some confirmation of this.
If true, on this issue, I find myself on the same side of the fence as GWB: which is something I had never previously considered possible, excepting possibly in a bar-room discussion over a pool table. (Yeah, it was a good shot...)
Given the real trouble spots in the world, apart from places that we (the US and UK) have invaded recently, if we'd done something about Darfur, or tightened sanctions against Myanmar, or tried to deal with the corruption in Zimbabwe or Kenya or Nigeria, GWB would have had me onside.
After all, I did (and do) agree with chasing Al Qaeda through the difficult terrain of Afghanistan. Some crimes can't be ignored.
I still think it was just a dream that vanished when I came back to the waking world.
'Some crimes can't be ignored....'
Including our own.
I deem that the invasion of Iraq is one of ours. The difference between Daniel Arap Moi's looting of Kenya* and Halliburton's rebuilding of Iraq's infrastructure is something I haven't as yet got entirely clear.
I'm sure someone will explain it to me.
Be sure your sins will find you out.
