I note Obama has done a good thing with his $117Bn Bank levy.

Some quotes caught my eye:

"It throws some sand into the gears," said Robert Albertson, chief strategist at Sandler O'Neill in New York.

"It's one more thing dragging on the sector, but it's spread over 10 years, so it's not so consequential. It's petty theft from bank balance sheets."

"Petty theft from bank balance sheets."

And what was the fucking bailout then? Picking the pockets of the taxpayer to pay for senior bankers' bonuses? Just what fucking planet are these people on?

Now if only someone this side of the pond had as big a set of balls as Barak. What the fuck is happening over RBS? We are the biggest shareholder. We should stop their bonuses now or tax them properly. Right now, actually. So what if they sod off and destroy someone else's economy. Of course the bankers say they are just 'paying the going rate for the job'. In which case the banking industry has to renormalise the remuneration for all those in the banking industry worldwide....downwards, by quite a bit, I deem.

I was one of those who saw an urgent need for the bank-bailout. But not to line the bankers pockets, just to restabilise the system. I begin to think we should have let them all go to the wall. In the UK the Bank of England has been lending to banks at 0.5% interest, which they have been passing on to their customers at the princely rates of between 4 to 7%, thus earning lots of money which they have paid themselves in bonuses.

I suppose we could always declare open season on the senior bankers in the way we do with grouse every 12th of August. We might just play fair and give 'em half-an-hour's head start if feeling especially generous.
