Jul. 17th, 2008 01:45 pmA bit of a palaver on the
politicartoons community.
j0kerr got banned for flouting the rules, silly lad. (I'm assuming gender here though I mistake folk all the time.) Though irritating in the extreme and wrong-headed and abusive, if he'd followed the rules of the community he would still have retained his right to free speech, and his right to mount his soapbox whenever he so chose.
politicartoons seems to be becoming a much more one-sided community, which is a shame.
I only signed up to LJ because of my interest in political cartoons....well, that and having a lot of time on my hands during Dad's final illness (when I went a little insane myself - such is.....).
Perhaps when Obama becomes President there will be enough dissatisfaction for rightwing folk to start posting again. However, Obama may (despite the economic meltdown) prove to be an able enough incumbent to avoid the obvious pitfalls of office. On this we shall all see.
In the meantime here's a cartoon from 1782 by James Gillray:

I've also been re-reading some of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester's filth; so here's a 'Satyr' on Charlie II from 1674, which is not fit for anyone under 18 or many folk older, and which got him banished from court:

In th' isle of Britain, long since famous grown
For breeding the best cunts in Christendom,
There reigns, and oh! long may he reign and thrive,
The easiest King and best bred man alive.
Him no ambition moves to get reknown
Like the French fool, that wanders up and down
Starving his people, hazarding his crown.
Peace is his aim, his gentleness is such,
And love he loves, for he loves fucking much.
Nor are his high desires above his strength:
His scepter and his prick are of a length
And she may sway the one who plays with th' other,
And make him little wiser than his brother.
Poor Prince! thy prick, like thy buffoons at court,
Will govern thee because it makes thee sport.
'Tis sure the sauciest prick that e'er did swive,
The proudest, peremptoriest prick alive.
Though safety, law, religion, life lay on 't,
'Twould break through all to make its way to cunt.
Restless he rolls about from whore to whore,
A merry monarch, scandalous and poor.
To Carwell, the most dear of all his dears,
The best relief of his declining years,
Oft he bewails his fortune, and her fate:
To love so well, and be beloved so late.
Yet his dull, graceless bollocks hang an arse.
This you'd believe, had I but time to tell ye
The pains it costs to poor, laborious Nelly,
Whilst she employs hands, fingers, mouth, and thighs,
Ere she can raise the member she enjoys.
All monarchs I hate, and the thrones they sit on,
From the hector of France to the cully of Britain.

It is, after all, possible to be nasty and satirical even about folk one likes and admires. (Though I doubt anyone could write about let's say, Nelson Mandela in such terms: and if anyone did, I'd probably be in the queue to issue my challenge along with half the thinking population.....unless it was really very funny indeed.)

Date: 2008-07-17 03:02 pm (UTC)However, if there is no debate, the community loses some of its point.
There are sensible lefties aboard, but it seems fewer sensible right-wingers: most of the folk on the right (with honourable exceptions) appear to be not of the considered variety, alas. This doesn't do the community as a whole any favours, as, IMHO, debate and discourse has become too one-sided.

Date: 2008-07-17 06:26 pm (UTC)Anyone that quotes Terence Homo sum: humani a me nihil alienum puto likely has sins to his name.
But he still may be a competent leader, and with the changes that GWB made to the constitution, he's going to have a lot more power than all the Presidents before him excepting GWB....also he has both houses onside (but not the SC Judges: though that can be amended).
This could be interesting

Date: 2008-07-17 05:24 pm (UTC)+ It is primarily liberal run, and seems to be becoming more restrictive than ever. (I'm a liberal, but even I get annoyed by some in the community.)
+ The same material is posted again and again -- non-cartoons, 40 versions of the same cartoon (mccain is old is a particularly popular meme, etc.).
+ There really isn't intelligent discussion. I don't often comment, but I do like to read...
