This is a rational bet given Cameron and Osborne's ongoing Whitehall farce; Constitutional CrisisTM which has been playing to worldwide audiences daily, and is now up for the political equivalent of the Golden Raspberries.
It is impossible to say how damaged we are now. I'm afraid we are holed below the waterline, the rigging has been shot to bits, and the time has come to strike our colours. It is obvious the Brexiters will not give an inch in any circumstances; in fact each semi-reversal makes them even more fundamentalist. Apropos of nothing, for some reason or other I thought of this:
