A traditional English gentleman is a tory, true; but would have an immeasurably greater sense of social responsibility. Rees-Mogg seems to have the politics of a counter-jumper with sharp elbows out for himself and his chums. But constrained by the appearance of gentility, obvs, so he has to pay lip-service to some things.
It is all like some bizarro updated version of Vanity Fair. A male Becky Sharp with ancestors. And now Leader of the House.
Personally I think Ian Hislop and Paul Merton have to hold their hands up here and admit that they helped detoxify Boris and Jacob. I wonder if there is a curse of HIGNFY in the way there is a curse of the Eye. Whatever, it hasn't worked on those two. Yet.
