Alas, I don't know enough about the finances, shortfall, misappropriations etc, of the education budget in America: so I cannot comment. But the short termism inherent in our present culture is a hangover from the 80's. Greed is good; a smaller cut, but of a much larger pie; profit now: these were the buzz phrases that were bandied about under the aegis of Monetarism alongside the other part of the credo: choice.
We have sacrificed quality for choice. This is certainly what has happened to TV. There are many more channels showing mainly unwatchable trash. If this constitutes choice (a thousand barely different types of shit) I'd prefer a single, well-funded, hierarchical, semi-fascist educative medium along the lines of the old BBC: and I hate semi-fascist structures almost as much as I hate fascist ones. But I hate willful ignorance even more.
