I would, in some ways, that Geoffrey had been my foil: but he was an example rather than a debater. He, I think, more than anyone I came to know of from my parents generations, knew how to live.

And those shall remain my fondest memories of him. Larger than life, booming, good humoured, and good natured, and despite military-service dignity a certain quiet flamboyance typical of the clever and arty English upper classes of a certain kind.
