So Thursday last I started work as a guitar teacher of junior-school-age persons. This is not how I am used to teaching, which for me had been more of an analytical, dare one say almost masterclass, experience. Guitar Basics is an interesting challenge in its own right, however: and ensuring a sensible level of communication with pupils (ie at their level) is the most vital skill in imparting information.
Also I inherited my Godfather's library. This has put a bit of a strain between myself and SWMBO, as suddenly flooding the house with another thousand books wasn't quite what she had signed up for. So for the first time in ages I'm going to have to edit my library, and quite severely. Such are the compromises of a married man. Nevertheless I shall regret each book passing from my hands into the cold and horrid outside world: left to fend for itself against the not-so-tender mercies of the marketplace, and other folks' unclean fingers.
Those books rejected will be donated to Trinity Hospice (who had been good to Geoffrey in his illness) as is proper.
So, thirty years of Glyndebourne programmes, anyone? Or ROH Covent Garden? I now own more than 20 books on collecting silver cutlery, hallmarks, tableware etc, along with a good few research papers on the same and associated subjects, and dedicated periodicals as well. Hundreds of art books, museum catalogues, auction catalogues. A catalogue from the 1897 Paris Salon caught my eye, evidently something G had inherited himself. As is also (probably) a WWI (1915) catalogue from the Royal Academy.
But for some people, Fred included, books are insufficient to furnish a room, and sometimes even supererogatory. Or maybe it's just the critical mass of them at present in our house.
I've two weeks to sort 'em all through, and edit drastically. Oh, that we had money enough to do all the things we want, and space enough to do 'em in….And then I think of folk who haven't enough to eat and know my woes aren't woes at all: I appear to be as blessed one could properly hope for, even had I all the skills of Lugh, and all the wisdom of Solomon.
Go well, do good things.

Date: 2012-02-01 08:55 am (UTC)The main problem with the art books is that they are all so large. Shipping them would be prohibitively expensive.
