Back when I used to know everything, rather than the things worth knowing, I was wont to pontificate after only the most cursory reading of my material. I considered that my weltanschauung, if that's the word I'm looking for, was predictively sophisticated enough to enable me to grasp the essentials of an argument and stride in from there.

Of course this is Hubris with a capital H. I was fortunate that I was directed to a now semi-abeyant LJ comm convert_me. The folk therein soon put me right, and gently too.

I miss the highpoint of LJ, some five or six years ago.

When it started, I refused to spend much time on facesbuch, because, in my snobbish opinion, most folk on there couldn't write to save their lives. In this FB was, and to some extent still is, completely unlike LJ: which was a place where almost everyone could communicate effectively, and sometimes even elegantly, via the written word.

And then the twittersphere took over.

And when the next thing follows after twitter, the written word will be debased changed yet further. I suppose that, unless we take care, we shall be inching towards some post-literate age: inasmuch as there will be fewer folk who are practised enough in the skills of writing accurately and pertinently. Maybe we shall communicate by the inflections of our "OMGs" and "FYIs", and our "and I was like". Maybe that will be enough. Totally. Whatever.

So much of modern life bores me and I guess that says something about me. I thank the gods of the interweb for LJ, even in its much diminished state.

I don't know if LJ is going down the tubes, or if its just one particular cohort dying out just cuz everybody has said everything that required saying and so there's nothing left. Familiarity breeds... silence?
