Now this is about the British press of the semi-fascist variety. The Scum, the Daily Fail, the Getsworse, and the Torygraph. (I happen to be a Tory, btw, though of a different kind to the sort that reads those not-fit-to-wipe-your-arse rags.)
How can you tell they are semi-fascist newspapers? Why, by the dog-whistle racism which they evince... hardly even in the closet.
I stand with Hal. I'm not the shape to be Falstaff, being too skinny by half, but I would be happy to attend him in his cups of both joy and sorrow.
Damn the gutter press. Damn them, damn them, damn them. William and Harry are both good blokes as well as being princes and gentlemen, and if either Harry's or Will's lass needs chaps to defend them against cowardly blackguards hiding behind thinly disguised prejudices expounded in polite language, I'm happy to call those blackguards racist fucking arseholes to their faces. And in print. And in front of their friends and family.
For those who don't know, the Royals can trace their family tree back quite a long way, and folk of most races appear on it. Harry is descended from both Attila the Hun and the Prophet Muhammed, as well as various Guelphs and Ghibellines. (And also from Ghengis Khan IIRC.) Someone needs to shake some decency and honour into the fourth estate. I blame the editors and proprietors. Maybe they should be held accountable in some way. Hahahaha.

A believer in a cohesive society, if accepting of social strata; with a leaning towards meritocracy, but basically a privileged semi-aristo aware of his good fortune, as is. Much like most of my type, who are, alas, a diminishing number, rather than the overwhelming majority of the competent and professional, as was once the norm.
People of my class and education no longer go into politics for the public good. They sometimes do so for personal gain, which I find objectionable; I would rather eat my own shoes than better myself at the expense of my honour, or what remains of it - but I sense I'm in a minority here.
I suppose all that adds up to a chap that sits on pretty much the same benches as you and attends the same divisions in almost all the big issues of the day.

Date: 2016-11-23 04:40 am (UTC)Ahh, the UK One Nation Toryism equivalent and quite similar to the Canadian Red Tories in many ways - especially the notion that the socially privileged are meant to have have a sense of public welfare and obligation.
The loss of that sense, I fear, has diminished politics a great deal and, as you say, has turned it into a crass game of power and self-interest.

She was toxic, but was made so by the constant investigation of people determined to prove something wrong about her. There's an Opera in there somewhere. Where is Verdi when we need him? Though Glass might do it justice of the Moderns.
Only those with nothing to hide or who don't care can now be in politics.
Saints and whores only. And there are precious few saints.
(Which is not to decry working lasses, as most of those whom I have met seem like decent folk - and before you ask, guitarist, rock 'n' roller, but still a gentleman. Never paid for sex, but I try not to let a lass be intimidated if I buy her supper. "No" can happen any time, even during, so to speak; and should always be respected. The mark of a gentleman is to respect it without sulking.)
