Now it really is over for GWB's Iranian expedition:

Didn't folk think this would happen?

I'm relieved about it.

The cold war was dead, GWB brought it back. It may be eventually what history will remember him for.

Who's the next target then? The American nation cannot support its habits, and refuses to get rid of them, and like an addict, it will go after whomever it can to get what it wants if the price isn't too high. Can we really be certain that whoever gets voted in next year won't do the same thing in a different place? Perhaps not next term, but who can say what will happen after the population is appeased come 2012 and the following term ends?

Russia's economy is based largely on natural gas. They're becoming quite tired of exporting to Europe and are currently making threats to bring their business to the US. To piss the US off, is to throw away a bargaining chip.

This is actually where it becomes quite amusing, as anti-aircraft/missile defenses have an extremely low shelf-life. Once you put a defence in place, it's only a case of putting a projectile together to counter it and then blow it up. Which you can actually do faster then they can put up defenses.

I believe Russia knows this, and thinks it's going to keep friends without pissing off potential partners. That, or this is another remnant of Russia's bluffing days.

'Bored' exporting to Europe.
Well given the pipeline situation to the US, of course they're getting bored with Europe: especially Germany.
And they have such an elegant pipeline to China and Japan being built, extending it to the USA would be a simple matter and not cost a silly amount of money.

Somehow, I think not.
With the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, the Nord Stream, the Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline, the AMBO pipeline, the Eastern Siberia-Pacific Ocean oil pipeline all connecting to Europe and East Asia, the logistics of supplying to the US are, let's say, a trifle involved.

"The EU-Russia Energy Dialogue was launched at the EU-Russia Summit in Paris in October 2000. At the working level the Energy Dialogue consists three thematic working groups. The Energy Dialogue involves the EU Member States, energy industry and the international financial institutions."

As for the US market....well, we'll see.

You can't mistake what they'll do and what they say they'll do. A pipeline to the US is ridiculous, their plans have it running where only the bravest explorers dare tread. It's simply Russia boasting it's independence to Europe and Asia, declaring that they don't necessarily need them.

The point is, Russia makes noise and very little else. I wouldn't hold your breathe that they'll be your white knight.
