From my experience, it always takes a certain amount of time to 'learn' a new partner's body. Some women are direct, some not....the trial and error factor inevitably leads to an amused apprehension. The editor in your head always wonders: 'Am I doing this right?' 'Is that a good sign?' etc....right up until the point where you think, 'oh well, that worked thank god' or those humiliating times when you just know you haven't gone about it the right way at all.
