The clearing of the flat continues.
Surveyor comes in on Tuesday, as does the kitchen designer. Builders the week after.

But apart from that all is well: excepting war, famine, pestilence, etc.

Good ol' Russia....turning the West's foreign policy on its head in one simple and easy invasion. Damn-fool Georgians for precipitating it, but we hardly have a leg to stand on, morally speaking. And we were all hoping the 21st century's competitions were going to be bloodless economic ones against China and India. Well, this chill wind will give the MI Complex a kick in the pants, which may be good for us economically in the short to medium term: which is all the politicians really care about.

And will there be a Beijing 'Bounce' for Gordon Brown? He seems too far down in the polls at the moment: but if a week's a long time in politics, 17 Olympic days is an æon, if that's the name of the period for which I'm stretching.

I'm disappointed in Russia big time, but I also saw this happening too. They weren't turning into one of the flowering western democracies and they are strategic competitors, not comrades. Russia should be kicked outta the G8, what we hoped for did not come to pass. It seems sad that they're still dreaming 19th and 20th century dreams of empire while the West helps finance it through their energy purchases.

With that said, the President of Georgia was a dumbass. Did he really think that NATO would back him up? Please, we weren't going to fight the Russians for Georgian territorial integrity. Putin was smart and seized on the opportunity. Maybe this will finally allows the West to take off it's blinders and see Russia for how it's really been for the past few years rather than we kept hoping it was.

Do you think the Labour government is going to survive the next elections? I'm not so sure, but I'm also not in any way shape or form an expert on UK politics.

Labour: depends on the economy. At present it looks extremely unlikely....but let's see in twelve months time. Beijing may provide the first 'pick-up' for Brown in the polls. Feelgood factors, even if diversionary, always make some difference.
