Nov. 3rd, 2008 12:32 pmWell, the Hamilton lad proved to the rest of the world that black chaps can drive cars at least as well as anyone else if they're given the chance. Spurs drew at Arsenal and beat Liverpool. All we need now is for Obama to win the US election and the old order will finally have to get to grips with the modern world, which would be nice. (Actually Spurs beating Liverpool harks back almost fifty years....but I'll try to avoid letting facts get in the way of my thesis.)
The first mixed-race British Prime Minister (and apparently the only one to date) was Lord Liverpool* who was partially Indian through his mother, Amelia Watts. It's been almost two hundred years since we've had a "person of colour" lead Great Britain, and he happened to be an Aristo. England in particular has had a tradition of black folk of various kinds being an integral part of our nation: though we also have a long history of slavery and oppression. (But, after 1807, if a slave set foot on a British Navy ship they were automatically freed....which meant they were also liable to impressment - the Gods alone know which was worse.)
I shall listen to Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's violin concerto and meditate on black and mixed-race folk in the West finally coming into their own: and I shall raise a glass to both Lewis Hamilton and Barack Obama. Your good health and continuing success, sirs.
