On Saturday the Mother 'phoned. My godfather, Geoffrey, died on Friday.

I'd been meaning to try to arrange a visit to see G. and John to display young Henry, but I didn't get around to it. Not going to happen now, is it.

Henry is teething, and has the occasional loud bouts of discomfort.

This morning, as soon as our nanny arrived, I had to take Mother's neighhbour to the Royal Marsden for some experimental treatment for her cancer.

It all really could do with being a little better at the moment. Tomorrow morning I have an interview for a post as a peripatetic music tutor in Bromley (which is a borough of London). Too much going on to be sensible about the outside world.

Go well, do good things. Consider your position carefully, and do nothing mean of spirit, or disfiguring of soul. We have too short a time to be ugly in attitude, behaviour, or motivation. The craic and playing to the gallery are understood by all, but....

I hope you're well. The stoic approach can sometimes postpone the feelings of loss... Though I'm reminded of the story of Chuang Tzu's display when he passed the grave of Hui Tzu.

I would, in some ways, that Geoffrey had been my foil: but he was an example rather than a debater. He, I think, more than anyone I came to know of from my parents generations, knew how to live.

And those shall remain my fondest memories of him. Larger than life, booming, good humoured, and good natured, and despite military-service dignity a certain quiet flamboyance typical of the clever and arty English upper classes of a certain kind.

Liked your recent post. Didn't agree with it, of course.

Sorry to hear of your loss. On the other hand, I am glad your son has teeth. Useful, those.

J9F, I don't know you very well, but you're one of the people I most respect on LJ. If there's anything I can do to help, and it's in my power to give, you have my support.

Nowt to be done except to celebrate the dying and the dead, as the poet says.

There are better people to respect than me, but support is always welcome. Many thanks.

Peace be with him.

In many ways, we make our own place in the world - how we're seen and how folks deal with us. May joy and delight be frequent companions to you, sir, especially when things are complex or difficult.

I never know what to say in these situations, Sorry never seems to cut it!

Kids got teeth? he'll be snapping at your ankles next!

Wise words.

I must look in more, seems I've chosen an unfortunate moment to look in, sorry.

Teeth are-a-coming. There are things to be chewed in order to get them to appear.

The most difficult thing is cutting his fingernails. Scary moment indeed.

G. was a good sort. Only man I've ever known to say "Fuck" out loud at a dinner table and make my mother laugh.

How's the new life? Big steps sometimes have a sort of badly-cranked-zoetrope quality to them, or have in my remembrance, anyway.

I find that the main change is in how people outside of the relationship view us. People seem to be oddly put at ease by the fact that I'd enter willingly into an ancient institution.
