I'm pretty gutted. I was hoping for him to return to the stage when his kids were older; around about now I guess. I was a big fan of Colour of Spring but the Glam Ex GF (not the Ex Wife) had a big thing about all of Hollis's work, and I rather thought she had a point; even though I'd started on my serious Classical kick by then.
(When you work in the music biz as a musician/arranger/producer often you want to listen to anything else but any of the music you've been playing, or using as reference - I was a session guitarist/arranger and occasional producer playing pretty much everything I had the right kit for; so I played or faked everything but Classical guitar or Flamenco, and then went home and listened to Bach or Sibelius. I must be in discursive mood, my asides are longer than my points.)
My impression is that Talk Talk was never very big on this side of the
pond: When I mentioned today to some friends that Hollis had died, and I
was very sad, they said, Who? I remember a couple of very
meaningful acid trips whose soundtrack was The Rainbow.
I don't think America was ready for Post-Rock in the '80's. For that matter, most folk over here weren't.
I must admit I haven't tripped in twenty years. All these damn grown-up responsibilities got to me rather later in life; when other folk's kids were leaving the nest and going to Uni I was changing nappies on my two.
But unexpected and unlooked-for parenthood has brought other joys to compensate - to crown a lifetime's effort with shit, if not shame, if I may paraphrase the poet.
I suppose all shall be well eventually. :) Fuck it, it is February, if my prose doesn't reflect Little Gidding I'm reading the wrong stuff for the time of the year. Climate change screws up even my pleasurable reading schedule. I feel a rant brewing...
