Couldn't resist this.
I loathe both Brown and Blair, & am trying to be in the centre dispite my radical past and inclinations, but...

I felt it too parochial to be posted in [community profile] politicartoons, as it's 'Little Englander' stuff.
I suppose I'll end up supporting Cameron: he has personal values I respect, and I've heard of very good behaviour under stress from an early age. But I distrust the Tories deeply, even if I trust Cameron the man. We must always be on our guard when dealing with the party of Tebbit.

Please forgive my naivete, but why would one want to try "to be in the centre?" (Is the meaning of that different on your side of things?)

I had a guest speaker in one of my classes yesterday who announced that "Bill Clinton is a mass murderer." Now, I didn't say it (not that I don't believe it), but I'm soon to be on the right's watchlist of dangerous radicals in academia. I might as well give up ever having a tenure track position right now. Hmmm, maybe I ought to try to be in the centre too..

I had a radical past (squats, communes, political activism etc). I was an Anarcho-Syndicalist in my late teens/early twenties. I'm still somewhat anarchistic in my emotional responses, but I feel they neither engage properly with society, and are ideologically prone to devolve into petty Stalinism. As political beliefs go, Anarcho-Syndicalism doesn't function well in our present society, it is too marginal and also to most people's tastes too extreme. [livejournal.com profile] softside is so right when he complains of the right moving the goalposts in the general political debate.
As a musician, I can play to the bandstand or the audience; but most of the time not both. The audience is why I'm onstage in the first place. And though musicians hate the audience's uneducated ears and boring taste, the audience is, I suppose, our purpose.
Politics should be the art of the possible. So I'm attempting the task of helping reclaim the centre for the centre, in the hope that as society changes, others can find antithesis and synthesis for themselves, but they'll be starting with a more level playing field.
