That history will have to record H.M. the Queen as Elizabeth the Great to differentiate her from Elizabeth I. She is, after all, the greatest monarch the world has ever seen, and the greatest head of state. After her, poor old Charlie will have to be slightly more low-key.

Elizabeth Windsor was born heir to the greatest Imperial Throne in history. She lived through the war, where she did her duty and more, and was queen in the period of dissolution of Empire, and the growth of the Modern world. She has done her duty and more throughout her life and reign and has set an example for all heads of state to follow, for as long as there needs be heads of state.

There is an argument to say that sometimes a series should go out on a high point, before it jumps the shark. Monarchy jumped the shark long before there were speedboats to pull water-skiers. But so has every other form of head of state. The elected ones are more often than not much worse, and even the best aren't in H.M.'s league.

Each case on its merits. One great monarch doesn't mean the whole institution isn't inherently wrong, But since Victoria only one of our constitutional monarchs hasn't been up to the job, and he didn't last long. We are not all equal. When it comes to Her Maj no-one else I can think of would have been tethered to the stupidity of being a monarch with such duty, dignity, grace, and basic decency. And she's still doing it at 93.

When we witter on about excellence sometimes we really do miss the elephant in the room; my nation has never had a greater or better monarch and will never manage to give birth to a better, as the time of King-Emperor's has passed.
